Photographic Series: Final Idea & First Shoot

For my final idea, I had to think about the different ways I could stage a murder scene and how my victim will be murdered. And I ended up going with the idea of having some one run over. I wanted to focus on using red lighting to mimic street lights and then have a blue or green light to remind the viewer that what they are looking at is not actually the event itself but a recollection from different peoples memories.

I began by looking at places where I could shoot outside. I needed some where local, cut off from causing obstruction with other cars and somewhere with limited lighting so I could have as much control as possible with the lighting. Luckily enough our student housing has private parking behind our houses which gave me all of these things.

Now that I had my location, I had to figure out how I would stage the scene and where I would do my different perspective shots from. I had to come up with a rough story of each person, give them a role and why they were there in that moment to witness the event and where they would be located:

Victim getting hit by car :  Gianni: On hood of car as if he is mid-hit
Driver: Nic (actual owner of car): in driver seat looking shocked but also possibly as if it was on purpose (dependant on whose perspective it is from)
Passenger: Vicky: in passenger seat completely shocked in one photo, looks worried
Window on-looker: Ellie: Was just there by chance and was having a cigarette out the window and just happened to see what happened.
Cyclist: Harry:  see's the hit head on

I roughly sketched out the shots I wanted from each persons perspective after I figured out who and where they were:

Where they will be put:

CYCLIST (HARRY'S) PERSPECTIVE:
Because the character of the cyclist will be turning the corner and essentially be having a head on view of the incident, The shot will be of the victim across the hood of the car but the focus be on the driver and passengers reaction. I'd quite like a harsh red lighting to be prominent in this shot to highlight the danger with blue tones in the background whilst the rest remains dark.

DRIVER'S (NIC'S) VIEW:
I will be in the back seat taking an over the shoulder photo of the driver that displays the victim on the hood of the car from behind the wind screen. Will be able to see cyclist in background beyond the hood of the car cycling towards evident, lit up by flood lights of car and possible spotlight. Be able to see the drivers eye and reaction in rear view mirror.

VICTIM (GIANNI'S) PERSPECTIVE :
Shot depicting drivers reaction behind the screen but also be able to see victims own legs in shot as getting hit is such a shambles. Mainly a red lighting shot. (drawing is not quite accurate but it will be done from his P.O.V. of victim)

ON-LOOKER FROM WINDOW (ELLIE'S) PERSPECTIVE:
Younger lady smoking out of a window from high floor over looking town but gets a glimpse of the incident by chance.

PASSENGERS REACTION/ PERSPECTIVE:
Have a shot from drivers side window who is in shock still looking forward but is the after shot of the incident and passenger is looking directly at them in shock and frustration.

FIRST SHOOT

For my first shoot I realise now I was very underprepared for this shoot and hadn't fully thought about what factors i needed to consider which therefore led me to come across many issues:

  • I had very minimal light sources to what I actually needed which was a major issue as my main focus was lighting and especially as I was shooting in the dark. So this was the first major issue I encountered. I had raise the ISO as a result of this, however, I still did not getting the results I wanted.
  • Starting at 9pm was far too late as models timings did not coordinate so shoot kept being postponed.
  • car battery ran completely down which was a nightmare and needed to be jump started (due to previous car issues)
After the first shoot, I didn't have the outcomes I wanted and learned I needed to do a lot more planning in detail before hand and be more organised as the execution of the shoot was a lot more complicated than I had considered.
However, I did leave a decent amount of time to organise another shoot and was able to execute this with proper equiptment and planning.
