Experimental Video #1: Initial Idea
****************************************************************************
KEY CONCEPT
Our basic concept is to create a paper town and then have animations which we will create, projected on to the set. We have yet to decide if we will be creating a story or if it will be abstract in terms of what we will be projecting.
Aesthetic of town:
- industrial dystopian town
- factories in background
- houses in foreground
Some basic ideas which we could explore are:
- A morphing town/ a normal vs upside down world
- experiment with mirrors to distort and make the town seem bigger than it is
- The meaning of each individual house
- Create a character for each house
- The street alive at night
- Create a dystopian town and use animation to reflect and emphasise the towns problems

For the experimental video, I initially wanted to be more hands on and do animation and more arty Ellie and I were inspired by two pieces from the 2019 Royal Academy Summer show by Su Blackwell and Stuart Wroe. Both artists created a little paper type set but in two very different ways.
Su Blackwell created more of a 3D paper set from a book and had houses suspended, almost as if they were floating and being sprouted out from the story of the book. I really like the small scale and how intricate and detailed this piece was. She used minimal colour and worked primarily from the pages of the book. The background black and book and houses visible in its natural state.
Stuart Wroe's work was done less in a 3D way and more in a photographed, collaged frame. I really like the multi story effect he created and I feel like adding each box/square really challenges the viewers perception of the space. This is emphasised by the missing images and boxes which appear towards the bottom of the piece.

More of Su Blackwell's work:
I really like how she works out of a book as if the story comes alive. However, she never depicts the people in the stories, just the setting. Her pieces are very intricate and detailed and all have some form of interior lighting which I think adds a sense of space and realness to the little structures.
