Photo series: Final Outcome

FINAL SHOOT

Equipment used:
  • 2 LED lights
  • 1 LED spotlight
  • 3 Tripods
  • 3 Sandbags
  • Battery packs
  • 15 metre extension cord
  • gels
For this shoot I was far more prepared in comparison to the first shoot. I had set up the lighting way before hand and made sure the car was in a good condition to shoot. In addition, I had organised with all models well ahead of time and we started and finished promptly. I had two LED lights, one red/orange to replicate a streetlight or traffic light. This light also gave a sense of danger, warning and abruptness. I used the second LED light with the blue gels to highlight the moonlight and memory aspect of the set. I really enjoyed the setting up of the shoot and directing the models in order to create the final images.
I did find that my final out comes looked a tiny bit underexposed but I was able to rectify this a little with photoshop. However, the one issue that i always forget to consider is that when you get the images printed, they always appear a little darker in a physical photographic print rather than digitally.

I really enjoyed the coming up and developing ideas which was then followed by the research. I always find the actual shooting of sets a bit far more difficult than shooting in the moment as there are a lot more factors to be considered physically and then technically which is still a bit new to me.

With the editing, my main focus was editing the lighting and colour which I wasn't completely happy about. As I felt it was it was darker than I wanted it to be in some of the photos. But overall, there wasn't a great deal of editing to be done in post.

In terms of the physical prints, again I would have liked for them to be a bit more exposed and more colour. And for hanging the piece I thought it was best to do it in evidence board form as if we are trying to string together all of the subjective memories in order to find out the subjective truth.

  1. An interesting idea but hugely ambitious which requires much planning and testing of lighting. Shooting at night with a big cast is a big ask. The amount of crew and lights that Crewdson uses is like that on a feature film. You thought about the colours but not enough about how light creates modelling and depth within the frame. Always easy to talk about this in retrospect of course. Some of these ideas could be explored in a studio before organising a big cast and crew. If you wanted to discuss and learn from this exercise I would be delighted. The most effective image in terms of content (although lighting is still an issue) is the one of Ellie looking out of the window. There is something in the framing and look and cigarette which is very satisfying. I think you came out of this assignment feeling quite bruised and and your confidence took a big bashing. You took a giant leap and fell down - thats only to be expected. Reflect back on this and even consider having another go. This plan was arrived at fairly late in the day when actually it needed planning in detail much more like a scene from a film.
