IDEAS AND DEVELOPMENT

As a group we came up with a some initial ideas as to what our documentary should be about. The main two ideas were:

1) SEX SHOP:
Focusing on one or multiple sex shops and the passion revolving around normalising the industry.
- Why is there a taboo around it?
- Maybe talk to regular customers if can get access and build a trusting relationship with them to talk about it.
- Feminist perspective

Link to People & Place: Exploring the type of people who come in and out of sex shops (e.g. regular customers). As well as the owners of the shop. Getting to know the type of community they are in and how the outsider world views this.

2) SYNAESTHESIA:
- Doing a series of interviews with synaesthetics exploring their condition.
- Explore ways of recreating the visuals in their heads through After Effects, animation and sound.
- Find people with different forms of synaesthesia, who each have different triggers.
- Primarily look at people who are going in to or already working in the creative industry

Link to People & Place: As it is a personal condition that can come in different forms that affects your perception of your surroundings, therefore fitting with 'place'. And as it is so personal and dependant on what type of synaesthesia you have, therefore it links to ‘people'.

Feed Back
After proposing ideas, the feed back we got was very mixed on both ideas. People were more interested and thought it would be fun to do the Sex Shop, depending on the stance we take and how we approach it. However, it became clear to us that not many people knew what synaesthesia was during this feed back. This also gave us more reason to create a documentary on the subject matter as it was a chance to educate people about the condition and maybe even help people to figure out if they had it or not. The feedback we did get from those who knew what it was, was that it it would be very interesting if we did explore ways to visually represent the experiences a synaesthetic goes through.

We originally decided to go ahead with the Sex Shop documentary but soon discovered it was very difficult to get a contributor to agree or respond. So after a meeting with Anne, we came to the conclusion that we had to carry out research and temporarily take on board both ideas at the same time.
This consisted of a series of emails being exchanged between us and contributors in terms of the Sex Shop idea. Furthermore, we put a series of posts on our social medias and on the UCA Freshers page in which we got a lot of responses in terms of the synaesthesia documentary..
Due to the overwhelming amount of responses we got for the Synaesthesia idea, we came to the decision that we would be more successful in this project with this project topic due to responses and availability.
